Why is stretching important? (biological explanation)

Stretching is essential because it keeps the body functional and healthy. Biologically, muscles adapt to the positions we are in most often and tend to shorten. By stretching, they return to their natural length, which improves strength and mobility.

At the same time, stretching maintains the elasticity of tendons and fascia, collagen-rich structures that become stiff without movement. Joints also benefit, as movement stimulates the circulation of synovial fluid, necessary for nourishing cartilage.

Last but not least, stretching “educates” the nervous system to allow a greater range of motion, reducing tension and the risk of injury.

In short, stretching helps the body move more easily, more efficiently, and without pain.
